Born in 1900, 'DR' (as he was know to his friends and colleagues) was one of a family of fifteen children who were brought up in the mining town of Brynmawr, in South Wales. From working in the mines, at the age of thirteen, my grandfather rose to become the General Treasurer of the APEX Union and Vice Chairman of the Birmingham Re­gional Hospital Board (as well as other senior NHS posts in the Midlands).
